Stars and chains in blues and neutrals are sure to capture any star-lover’s fancy! What a great way to clear out scraps by choosing two color families: A foreground (Blue) and a background (Neutral) Students will learn the basics of string piecing along with learning to use the Easy Angle ruler to create half square triangle units from 2 1/2″ scrap strips. This quilt was a great way for me to use a large variety of blue and neutral scraps for the half-square triangles, and even more scrap fun clearing out a whole box of neutral strings used in the alternate block areas. Smith Mountain Morning is a two-block quilt, with the star block, a 54-40 or Fight variation, in two colorways, and a Chimney and Cornerstones log cabin variation which is rotated to complete the design between the stars. This pattern is found in my book Scraps & Shirttails II which may be purchased from my website at Quiltville.com. Students will learn the use of specialty rulers for half square triangles using the Easy Angle Ruler, Quarter Square Triangles using the Companion Angle Ruler, and the Tri Recs rulers for the tall star points! Nicole will describe her journey as a quilter and discuss features of the modern quilting movement, including the online community and different styles and techniques of modern quilting. Nicole Neblett is a modern quiltmaker, designer, instructor, and blogger. Nicole’s quilting life started in 2001 with the first quilt she made, a traditional sampler, but it wasn’t until she discovered the modern quilting movement in 2010 that she embraced modern quilting. Taking inspiration from everyday objects and places, she enjoys crafting quilts with vivid colors and graphic designs. Her work incorporates modern design principles with traditional and improvisational techniques to create quilts that fuse the traditional with the contemporary. Her work has been featured in places such as Sew Mama Sew, Modern Patchwork, Modern Quilts Unlimited, Craft Gossip, FaveQuilts, and QuiltCon. Our January meeting, January 20th, will be our bi-annual guild silent auction. I hope you have sorted through your quilting related stuff and picked out items that you no longer want. Group your items rather than include individual small items. When you get to the meeting, we will have tables set up and forms will be available for you to set the initial price and the bid increment. All of the proceeds go to the guild, so please take advantage of a very fun activity. Once the auction is set up, I will set a timer and let everyone look at everything and bid on items you want. The high (last) bidder at the end of the appointed time will win and will pay for the items at the “cashier”. Anything that does not get a bid will go home with the person that brought it to the auction. You will be able to pay for items you win with a check or with cash. I suggest bringing some singles and quarters as many items will increment at $0.25 with each successive bidder. If you plan to do some serious shopping, you may want to bring tote bags or cardboard boxes …
